FD and LPG rules from October 1: what changes for you

Three money rules change from October 1: bulk fixed deposit disclosures, LPG subsidy checks and SBI withdrawal limits. Here is what each means for you.

First, bulk fixed deposits. Banks must publish bulk FD rates on their websites by 10 am every business day, and the rate you get must match what is published. Similar deposits on the same day must get the same rate, so big depositors cannot be quietly offered worse terms.

Second, LPG. Biometric Aadhaar e-KYC becomes mandatory to keep receiving subsidised cooking gas through direct benefit transfer. Without it, the subsidy may stop. Third, SBI Basic Savings Bank Deposit accounts now allow only four free cash withdrawals a month; each extra withdrawal costs Rs 15 plus GST.

A related change: Indians buying immovable property from NRIs no longer need a tax collection account number, or TAN, from October 1.

Check your bank’s published rates and complete your LPG e-KYC soon. Small steps now can save money and hassle later.
