WhatsApp testing Contacts tab with online status, birthdays
WhatsApp is testing a dedicated Contacts tab for its Android app that brings contacts, online status and birthday reminders into one place. The change builds on an earlier plan to show online contacts inside the app’s Settings.
The feature was spotted by WABetaInfo in beta version 2.26.40.3. A search bar at the top finds contacts by name, number or username. Contacts can be sorted by activity or alphabetically, with a green dot showing who is online.
The tab also shows birthday reminders. Contacts with a birthday that day get a cake emoji and a “Birthday today” label, using dates saved in the phone’s address book. An “Invite a friend” option and a shortcut to chat with Meta AI sit at the bottom.
WhatsApp says the tab respects existing privacy settings. People who hide their online or last-seen status will not suddenly become visible.
Context: the feature is still under development and has not rolled out to regular users yet.
