Swiggy turns shopping into an AI task as India moves past copilots

India’s digital economy is entering a new phase where artificial intelligence does the shopping, not just suggests it. Food delivery giant Swiggy connected its Food, Instamart and Dineout services to AI assistants through the Model Context Protocol in January 2026.
Assistants such as ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini can now search, compare, build carts, apply offers, place orders, track deliveries and book tables. Instamart became the first quick-commerce platform in the world to integrate the protocol, exposing more than 40,000 products.
In April, Swiggy’s Builders Club opened the layer to outside developers, with three protocol servers and more than 18 tools at launch. Retail is following: Reliance Retail-backed Fynd says its agent has handled over 4.3 million interactions, while BigBasket piloted grocery purchases inside ChatGPT settled through UPI Reserve Pay.
The shift is from platform to ecosystem. The AI becomes the interface, and the store becomes the backend.
For Indian consumers, the app may soon be optional. The question for companies is how to stay visible when an agent does the choosing.
