Sony brings AI upscaling to standard PS5

Sony has announced Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR), a new AI upscaling technology that brings sharper visuals to the standard PlayStation 5.
QSSR was revealed on the PlayStation Blog on October 1. It is a streamlined version of the PSSR upscaling used on the PS5 Pro, built through Sony’s Project Amethyst collaboration with AMD. The first games to support it will be Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yotei.
Upscaling lets games render at lower resolution and then use AI to sharpen the image. This keeps frame rates smooth while making games look better on 4K televisions. QSSR uses a neural network tuned to run on the standard PS5’s hardware.
Sony said PSSR remains the “gold standard” for image quality on the PS5 Pro. QSSR is positioned as a way to extend AI upscaling benefits to the much larger base of standard PS5 owners.
The announcement shows Sony doubling down on AI-assisted graphics as the console generation matures. More studios are expected to add QSSR support to upcoming releases.
