Shopify extends WebMCP AI protocol to checkout

Shopify has extended its WebMCP protocol to checkout, letting AI agents complete purchases on merchant stores on behalf of shoppers.
WebMCP is an open protocol that lets AI assistants read and act on web pages in a structured way. By bringing it to checkout, Shopify allows agents to handle the full shopping journey, from browsing products to paying, while merchants keep control over how their storefronts behave.
The move positions Shopify at the centre of the emerging agentic commerce wave, where AI assistants increasingly do the shopping. Merchants can expose structured checkout flows without building custom integrations for every agent platform.
Analysts say the extension matters because checkout is where AI shopping either works or breaks. Handling payments, discounts, shipping and taxes through a standard protocol could remove one of the biggest barriers to agent-driven buying.
The announcement comes as big tech companies race to make their AI assistants capable shoppers. Shopify’s bet is that an open standard will win merchant trust faster than closed, platform-specific approaches, keeping its millions of stores compatible with whatever agents shoppers use next.
