Qualcomm, Huawei Sign Patent Deal for 5G and AI

Huawei and Qualcomm have signed a broad multi-year patent licensing agreement covering 5G, artificial intelligence, computing and networking.
Announced on October 5, the deal includes cross-licenses to both companies’ patent portfolios. Qualcomm will also buy selected Huawei patents in the United States covering compute, AI and networking. Financial terms were not disclosed.
It is Huawei’s first patent licensing agreement with Qualcomm covering 5G technology, according to the Chinese company. The transaction needs regulatory approvals before it closes.
Huawei said the deal is expected to push the total value of its patent licensing agreements past $6.9 billion. Huawei’s first licensing payment was to Qualcomm in 2001; its first licensing revenue came from Motorola in 2011.
Both companies said the deal follows fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory licensing principles.
The deal follows Huawei’s cross-licensing agreement with HP earlier this year and shows the Chinese firm’s patent strength despite years of sanctions.
Trade analysts say the agreement could set a template for other US and Chinese technology companies navigating sanctions.
