Norway Plans Temporary Ban On AI Glasses In Public Places

Norway's government said on Monday it plans to propose a temporary ban on the use of AI glasses in some public places. The move is driven by privacy worries. The ban could cover parks, beaches, museums, shopping centres, and public events.

It could also apply to schools, playgrounds, and youth clubs. Health offices, swimming pools, and gyms with changing rooms are also under review. Digitalisation minister Torgeir Micaelsen said he was worried that people could be photographed, filmed, or recorded without knowing it.

He called the ban a high priority. The government said it is not planning a total ban. Private use would still be allowed where no one is at risk of being filmed without consent.

The plan follows a wider backlash against smart glasses. New York has barred them from courtrooms. Hamburg has moved to restrict them on public transport and in pools.

An expert group will advise Norway on permanent rules for body-worn technology. Micaelsen said the ban was a high priority. He plans to present a legal proposal to parliament as soon as possible.
