Huawei and Qualcomm sign multi-year patent deal on 5G, AI

Huawei and Qualcomm have agreed a broad multi-year patent licence deal. The companies announced it on October 5. The deal covers artificial intelligence, 5G, computing and networking technologies. It includes cross-licences to both companies’ patent portfolios. Qualcomm will also buy certain Huawei US patents in computing, AI and networking. It is Huawei’s first patent licensing deal with Qualcomm covering 5G. The deal pushes the total value of Huawei’s patent licensing agreements above 6.9 billion dollars. Huawei said its IP licensing business has been profitable since 2021. The company ramped up research spending after US trade restrictions in 2019. Those restrictions limited its access to advanced chips and software. Huawei made its first licensing payment to Qualcomm in 2001. Its first licensing income came from Motorola in 2011. The deal follows a licensing agreement with HP announced in August. The transaction needs regulatory approvals before it closes. Financial terms were not disclosed. The companies said the deal follows fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory principles. It shows Huawei remains a top patent holder despite years of sanctions.
