SpaceX’s Starship reached low-Earth orbit for the first time on its 14th test flight, launched at 8:48 a.m. EDT on September 28 from Starbase, Texas. The milestone came about 26 minutes after liftoff, when a Raptor engine burn pushed the vehicle into orbit.

The flight was not without trouble. One of six engines shut down minutes after liftoff, but the flight team verified the three central Raptor engines were healthy and proceeded. In orbit, the ship deployed 26 next-generation Starlink V3 satellites. Elon Musk said the satellites are operational and will add 26 terabits per second of capacity, roughly one percent of the world’s internet capacity.

The mission was cut short from a planned 10-hour, six-orbit flight to about three hours. The splashdown was confirmed in the Pacific Ocean, where the rocket tipped over and was engulfed in flames on landing.

NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman congratulated SpaceX on the achievement. NASA plans to use a future version of Starship as the lander for its Artemis missions to the Moon.
