Lost medieval monastery found on Scottish island Lismore

A community-led dig has uncovered the remains of a major early medieval monastery on the Scottish island of Lismore, solving a centuries-old mystery. The findings were published in the journal Antiquity.

The monastery of Lios Mòr was founded in the sixth century by Saint Mo Luóc, but existed only in old records, place names and local stories. The Lismore Historical Society set out to find it, with excavations led by Dr Clare Ellis of Argyll Archaeology.

The team found a large burial ground, early buildings and a workshop where skilled workers shaped precious metals, carved designs and worked yew wood. Crucibles showed traces of gold and silver. Radiocarbon dates run from about AD 650 to 1040.

Researchers say the wealthy, influential community may have rivalled the best-known monasteries of early medieval Britain, such as Iona and Portmahomack. Further excavations are planned to map the full layout of the site. Authorities are expected to review the site’s protection status as research continues in the coming months.
