US President Donald Trump has signed a ‘morally binding’ AI safety accord with the chiefs of the biggest American tech companies.

The White House Accord on Super Intelligence was signed on September 29 after a luncheon with tech leaders. Signatories included Anthropic’s Dario Amodei, Google’s Sundar Pichai, Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg, OpenAI’s Greg Brockman, Nvidia’s Jensen Huang and xAI’s Elon Musk.

Trump called it ‘almost like a constitution’ and said it would allow ‘tremendous self-policing’ by the industry. The one-page document lays down four layers of safeguards: internal controls, checks against unintended system access, independent external audits and board-level oversight.

The accord carries no legal penalties. It says the steps may be codified into law over time, and Trump plans to name a 10-person oversight committee and an AI czar within days.

A day later, Trump signed an executive order directing federal agencies to replace the term ‘artificial intelligence’ with ‘Super Intelligence’ in official documents.

Why it matters: Washington is betting on voluntary industry policing instead of hard regulation in the AI race with China.
