Google Limits Free Gemini to Flash-Lite Model

Google is restricting free access to its Gemini AI chatbot, limiting users to the basic Flash-Lite model from October 9.

Users on the free tier currently have access to Gemini Flash-Lite, Gemini Flash and Gemini Pro. After the change, Flash and the more advanced Pro will no longer be available without a paid subscription.

The shift will affect users who rely on Gemini for complex queries, summarizing long documents or multi-step research, since Flash-Lite is Google's most cost-effective and least powerful model.

Paid plans are also affected. Google AI Plus subscribers will lose access to the Gemini Pro model, though they keep Flash-Lite and Flash.

In India, Google AI Plus costs Rs 199 per month initially, while AI Pro is priced at Rs 1,950 per month for advanced features. Google is expected to email AI Plus subscribers with details on when the changes take effect.
