FTC Fines Cox Media $930K Over Fake AI Claims

The US Federal Trade Commission has finalized orders against Cox Media Group and two partner firms over false AI advertising claims.
The companies agreed to pay a combined $930,000. Cox Media Group pays $880,000, while MindSift LLC and 1010 Digital Works each pay $25,000.
The FTC alleged the firms sold an “Active Listening” AI service. It claimed to detect purchase intent from conversations captured by smartphones, smart TVs and smart speakers.
No such capability existed. The service actually used purchased email lists from data brokers, not voice data from devices.
The finalized orders also impose 20-year compliance terms. The firms must maintain records of advertising claims and face FTC monitoring of future AI marketing claims.
They are barred from misrepresenting AI capabilities, voice data collection, consumer consent and geo-targeting abilities.
The Commission approved the final orders by a 2-0 vote. The companies neither admitted nor denied the allegations.
The case was first announced in May 2026. It is the FTC’s clearest signal that fake AI capability claims count as deceptive practices on their own.
