Apple ships Safari 27 with native MCP server for AI browser agents

Apple’s Safari 27 has become the first major consumer browser to ship a native Model Context Protocol server. The feature lets AI coding agents drive a real Safari window directly, according to Apple’s WebKit blog.

The release on September 17 gives agents 17 tools covering tabs, navigation, DOM access, network logs, screenshots and console output. Any MCP-compliant client, including Claude Code, Cursor, Codex CLI and Gemini, can connect without a third-party extension.

Enabling the server takes two opt-in steps. Users must check “Show features for web developers” in Settings, then “Allow remote automation and external agents” in the Developer pane. The feature is off by default.

Apple says the server runs entirely on the local machine. It makes no network calls of its own and cannot access personal Safari data such as AutoFill. Captured data goes directly to the connected agent, not to Apple.

Developers can now debug rendering issues by letting an agent read the live DOM and take its own screenshots, instead of describing bugs in prompts.
