Apple Reaches Hiring and Licensing Deal With AI Podcast Startup Huxe

Apple has reached an agreement to hire employees from AI audio startup Huxe and license its technology. The deal was revealed in a European Commission filing.
It is not an outright acquisition. Apple will be able to make job offers to certain Huxe employees and receive a non-exclusive license to the startup’s intellectual property.
Huxe was founded by former members of Google’s NotebookLM team: Raiza Martin, Jason Spielman and Stephen Hughes. Its app generated personalized audio briefings based on users’ emails, calendars and interests.
The startup announced in May that it was winding down. Its audio service ended on May 28.
The filing does not say which employees Apple may recruit or whether anyone has been hired yet. Apple notified the Commission of the arrangement on June 9.
The move suggests Apple wants to strengthen its AI audio and podcast capabilities. NotebookLM’s podcast-style audio overviews have been widely praised since launch.
