200MP iPhone camera not yet in active testing, says leaker

Apple’s 200-megapixel iPhone camera is not yet in active prototype testing, according to supply chain leaker Digital Chat Station. The sensors are only at the component-evaluation stage.
The leaker said on Weibo that 200-megapixel sensors, reportedly supplied by Samsung, have been discussed in the supply chain but have not appeared in engineering prototypes undergoing real-world imaging tests. The update, reported by MacRumors this week, pushes back earlier speculation.
Apple’s current camera work remains focused on refining 48-megapixel systems with better optical flexibility and low-light performance. The iPhone 18 Pro is expected to get a 48-megapixel main camera with variable aperture.
Morgan Stanley suggested earlier this year that a 200-megapixel iPhone could arrive in 2028. The leaker’s comments do not rule that out.
Samsung has offered 200-megapixel cameras since the Galaxy S23 Ultra in 2023. The Oppo Find X9 Ultra goes further with two 200-megapixel sensors.
Morgan Stanley reported in January that a 200-megapixel iPhone camera could arrive in 2028, a view the leaker’s latest post now supports. Apple has long prioritized optical quality over raw resolution.
