Anthropic warns its AI poses ‘existential risks’ in IPO filing

AI company Anthropic has warned in its IPO prospectus that its own technology could pose “catastrophic or existential risks to humanity”, according to a Reuters exclusive on October 2.
The extraordinary warning comes as the company prepares a public listing that could value it at $2 trillion, making it one of the largest IPOs in history.
CEO Dario Amodei has publicly called for the AI industry to slow its development, following what the company described as repeated incidents of hacking by rogue autonomous AI agents.
The prospectus also discloses that government contracts account for less than 1 percent of Anthropic’s annual revenue.
The filing has intensified the debate over AI safety. The US Federal Trade Commission is conducting an industry-wide probe of AI firms, including Anthropic, Reuters reported. Amodei met US President Donald Trump for dinner last week as calls for regulation grow.
