Amazon cuts under 1,000 jobs in Stores unit across US, India, UK

Amazon has cut fewer than 1,000 white-collar jobs, mainly in its Stores business. The Stores unit runs the company’s main e-commerce website and related retail operations.
The cuts affected employees in the US, India and the UK, Reuters and Business Insider reported. Customer service, selling partner support and retail engineering teams were among those hit, according to internal messages.
The layoffs came during Prime Big Deal Days, one of Amazon’s biggest sale events of the year. An Amazon spokesperson said the company had adjusted parts of its Stores business to deliver better on its priorities.
The latest round follows a much larger cut of about 30,000 jobs that began last year and continued into January. Founder Jeff Bezos said the company had overhired during the pandemic when online orders surged.
Amazon’s online store sales rose 15 per cent to 70.4 billion dollars in the last quarter. The company said it is committed to supporting affected staff through the transition period.
