Amazon eyes $8B Nvidia chip spin-off and lease-back, FT reports

Amazon has held talks with investors about moving about $8 billion of Nvidia chips into a separate investment vehicle and leasing them back. The Financial Times reported the plan on October 2, as carried by Reuters. The vehicle would raise money from outside investors by issuing debt. Amazon plans to offer an equity stake of up to 10 per cent in it. The chips are thousands of Nvidia Grace Blackwell AI accelerators. They are installed in more than a dozen US data centres across five states, including Nevada and Virginia. The talks are described as recent and exploratory. No deal has been announced. Amazon has not confirmed the plan. The move would let Amazon keep using the hardware while taking the expensive assets off its balance sheet. It reflects the financing strain of the AI buildout. Amazon expects to spend about $220 billion on capital projects this year. The company separately raised prices by about 15 per cent for EC2 Capacity Blocks, which rent out computing power on Nvidia chips. Nine of the largest US tech firms had about $3 trillion in off-balance-sheet commitments as of August.
