Uruguay thrash India 6-1 in Kolkata friendly

Uruguay thrashed India 6-1 in an international friendly at Kolkata's Salt Lake Stadium on Tuesday. Darwin Nunez put the visitors ahead from the penalty spot in the 11th minute, but Anirudh Thapa equalised in the 22nd minute, becoming only the second Indian footballer to score against the two-time World Cup winners. The match was then suspended in the 27th minute after lightning struck near the stadium, with players forced down the tunnel for 39 minutes. After the restart, Uruguay's class told: Maximiliano Araujo scored twice, and Rodrigo Zalazar, Juan Manuel Sanabria and Rodrigo Aguirre added goals. Around 37,000 fans watched India compete well in the first half before fading after the break. It was India's third high-profile friendly of the window after a 1-1 draw with Panama and a 4-0 defeat to Brazil. Uruguay, coached by Diego Forlan, had beaten South Korea 4-1 before arriving in Kolkata. India will take lessons from the heavy defeat as coach Khalid Jamil continues testing young players against top-tier opposition.
