Punjab has signed veteran fast bowler Umesh Yadav as its first-ever guest player for the 2026-27 Ranji Trophy season, the state association announced.

The 38-year-old, who has taken over 170 Test wickets for India, received a no-objection certificate from Vidarbha to make the move. Punjab Cricket Association president said the signing was aimed at ending the state’s 34-year wait for a Ranji title.

Guest players — professionals who represent a state other than their home association — have become a key Ranji strategy, and Punjab hopes Yadav’s experience will mentor its young pace attack through the long domestic season.

Yadav, known for his raw pace and reverse swing, remains one of India’s most successful fast bowlers. He is expected to join the squad ahead of the season opener and lead the attack in the early fixtures. Punjab last won the Ranji Trophy in the 1992-93 season, and the association has invested heavily in its pace programme in recent years. Team officials said Yadav’s presence in the dressing room would be as valuable as his wickets, especially for bowlers making their first-class debuts.
