Broncos Lose Star Cornerback Surtain to Ankle Injury in 49ers Defeat

Denver Broncos All-Pro cornerback Pat Surtain II injured his right ankle and missed the second half of the team’s 24-14 loss to the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday in Santa Clara. The injury was non-contact, occurring away from the play as Brock Purdy completed a 24-yard pass to Mike Evans with 38 seconds left in the second quarter.
Surtain, 26, turned in coverage, hopped on his left foot and went down grabbing his right ankle before being helped off the field. He was replaced by Jahdae Barron. The Broncos also lost fellow starting cornerback Riley Moss to a rib injury and wide receiver Pat Bryant, who was carted off with an ankle injury in the third quarter.
Coach Sean Payton had no updates after the game. Early reports suggest Surtain has avoided a long-term injury, with his Achilles intact, but an MRI on Monday will confirm the extent. The 2024 NFL Defensive Player of the Year may still miss some time.
The loss dropped Denver to 2-2, while the 49ers improved to 4-0.
