Mandhana Frontrunner To Replace Harmanpreet As Captain

Incumbent vice-captain Smriti Mandhana is the frontrunner to take over as full-time captain of the India women’s team across formats, Cricbuzz reported, after Harmanpreet Kaur stepped down following a BCCI review meeting in Guwahati.
A formal announcement is expected when the selectors meet to pick India’s squad for the upcoming Zimbabwe series. The BCCI is understood to want to build the team around Mandhana for the next World Cup and the Los Angeles Olympics, womencricket.com reported.
Harmanpreet was reportedly given the option of continuing as ODI captain but chose to give up both leadership roles. She said she leaves the captaincy with peace, believing the team is in a good place.
Mandhana, 29, has served as Harmanpreet’s deputy for years and has captained India in 18 T20Is and four ODIs, winning 15 matches across the two formats, according to reports. The Zimbabwe women tour India later this month for three T20Is in Raipur and three ODIs in Baroda.
