If Team Needs Him, Shami Can Return: India Assistant Coach Kotak

India assistant coach Sitanshu Kotak has said Mohammed Shami could return to the national team if the selectors believe his performances merit it.
“First of all, I am not a selector, so it is difficult for me to tell you that. But Shami is also playing and he is also doing well,” Kotak said in a press conference. “If the selectors feel that he is doing well and the team has a requirement, then any player can be selected.”
Shami last represented India in the Champions Trophy final against New Zealand in March 2025. He has been making his case through domestic cricket since.
Kotak’s comments came after the BCCI included veteran pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar in the T20I squad for the New Zealand series. Bhuvneshwar last played for India in November 2022 and was an important part of RCB’s bowling attack in their recent title-winning seasons.
The five-match T20I series against New Zealand begins in Christchurch on October 22.
