Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Indian athletes after a seven-medal haul on Day 8 (September 27) of the Asian Games 2026, taking India's tally to 37 medals: four gold, 16 silver and 17 bronze, placing India 12th in the standings.

The day brought two squash silvers and five athletics medals. The PMO shared posts on X congratulating the winners. Anahat Singh won women's squash singles silver, becoming the first Indian woman to reach an Asian Games squash singles final, losing 4-11, 4-11, 7-11 to Malaysia's Sivasangari Subramaniam.

Abhay Singh won men's singles silver, losing to Malaysia's world No. 17 Ng Eain Yow, who defended his title. World No. 26 Abhay became the second Indian to win men's singles silver after Saurav Ghosal. The PMO praised Anahat's "tremendous skill" and Abhay's "skill and determination."

In athletics, Ancy Sojan won women's long jump silver and Sarvesh Kushare took men's high jump silver, ending India's long wait for that medal. Bronze went to Harita Bhadra (women's 200m), Parul Chaudhary (3000m steeplechase) and Tejaswin Shankar (decathlon). Parul clocked a national record 9:08.67, while Tejaswin scored 7,934 points.

Day 9 brings the men's cricket quarter-final against Afghanistan, alongside several athletics finals.
