Lionel Messi plays final Argentina match in ‘The Last Tango’

Lionel Messi wears Argentina’s shirt for the final time on Tuesday, October 6, as the Albiceleste face Benin in a friendly at the Estadio Mas Monumental in Buenos Aires. The match, dubbed “The Last Tango”, kicks off at 7 pm ET.
About 85,000 fans are expected at the stadium, which sold out in under two hours. Messi, 39, enters the game with a record 207 caps and 125 goals for Argentina. Members of the 2022 World Cup-winning squad have been invited to the farewell.
Messi announced his international retirement in late August, about a month after Argentina’s 2026 World Cup final defeat to Spain. His honours with the national team include the 2022 World Cup, two Copa America titles and an Olympic gold medal in 2008.
Benin, ranked 89th by FIFA, are coached by Gernot Rohr and captained by Steve Mounie. For Argentina, the night is about bidding farewell to the greatest player in their history.
