Kumkum Mohod wins India’s first women’s recurve archery gold

Seventeen-year-old Kumkum Mohod won India’s first-ever women’s individual recurve archery gold at the Asian Games on Saturday. She beat South Korea’s Oh Yejin 6-5 in a dramatic shoot-off at Okazaki.

The final was tied 5-5 after five sets. In the one-arrow decider, Oh shot an 8 before Kumkum landed a perfect 10 to seal the title.

The win capped a remarkable day for the teenager. She had earlier beaten reigning world champion Kang Chaeyoung 6-4 in the quarterfinal and China’s Zhu Jingyi 6-2 in the semifinal.

Kumkum became the first Indian woman to win any medal in the individual recurve event at the Asian Games. The gold also earned India a quota place for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.

It was her third medal of the Games. She had already won the women’s recurve team gold and the mixed team silver on Friday. Tarundeep Rai, silver medallist at Guangzhou 2010, remains the only other Indian with an individual recurve medal.
