Virat Kohli became only the second batter after Sachin Tendulkar to reach 15,000 ODI runs, reaching the mark with an unbeaten 139 as India beat West Indies by eight wickets in the opening ODI in Thiruvananthapuram on Sunday.

Kohli struck 139 not out from 88 balls, hitting 10 fours and nine sixes. He reached the 15,000-run landmark in his 303rd innings, becoming the fastest to do so and eclipsing Tendulkar's previous mark of 377 innings. It was his 55th ODI hundred and his 86th international century.

Chasing 296, India finished at 300 for two in 41.4 overs with 50 balls to spare. Captain Shubman Gill made 110, his 10th ODI hundred, and shared a 151-run stand with Kohli off 132 balls. For West Indies, Justin Greaves scored a maiden ODI century and Kuldeep Yadav took four wickets in India's fightback with the ball.

The win gave India a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. At 37, Kohli said after the game he is working to 'unlock a new version' of himself, and the innings served as a reminder of his appetite ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup.
