Virat Kohli became only the second batter after Sachin Tendulkar to reach 15,000 ODI runs, as India beat West Indies by eight wickets in the first one-day international on Sunday.

Kohli struck an unbeaten 139 off 88 balls, his 55th ODI century and 86th in international cricket. Chasing 296 at Thiruvananthapuram’s Greenfield International Stadium, India reached 300 for 2 with 50 balls to spare and took a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

Shubman Gill supported Kohli with 110 off 108 balls, his 10th ODI hundred. The pair added 151 runs off 132 balls for the second wicket after Rohit Sharma fell for 32 in the 12th over.

Earlier, West Indies posted 295 for 7 after India won the toss and chose to bowl. Justin Greaves made a maiden ODI century and shared a 135-run opening stand with John Campbell. Kuldeep Yadav’s 4 for 40 triggered a middle-order collapse before Amir Jangoo’s 58 off 43 balls lifted the visitors.

The win gives India a 1-0 lead heading into the second ODI. Kohli reached the 15,000-run mark faster than any man in the format’s history, underlining his standing among ODI cricket’s greats.
