Justin Verlander made the 557th and final start of his 21-year career Saturday. The 43-year-old pitched at Comerica Park against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

He went 5.1 innings on 91 pitches, per the reports. Verlander struck out six and gave up five hits, including two solo home runs. A pregame retirement ceremony had been held the night before.

The farewell belonged to his family. His seven-year-old daughter Genevieve ran to the mound to make the pitching change. She had thrown the ceremonial first pitch at Friday’s ceremony. His wife Kate Upton and son Bellamy were on the field.

Verlander signed with Detroit in the offseason. Hip and hamstring injuries limited him to two games in 2026. He compressed about a month of rehab to make the start. It was his first appearance in a Tigers home uniform since Aug. 20, 2017.

Across 21 seasons, outlets credit him with about 3,560 strikeouts and a 266-159 record. He won three Cy Young Awards, an AL MVP, and threw three no-hitters. Detroit won the game 4-3 on Eduardo Valencia’s game-ending two-run homer in the ninth.
