On the pitch, Heimir Hallgrimsson’s side dominated. The three goals sealed a comfortable victory for Ireland in what had been one of the most politically charged fixtures of the Nations League.

The boycott has drawn wide attention to the tensions surrounding the match. Football authorities have not yet commented on whether any action will be taken over the protest.
