Uruguay Rout India 6-1 After Lightning Halts Friendly

Uruguay thrashed India 6-1 in a FIFA international friendly at Kolkata’s Salt Lake Stadium on Tuesday, after lightning forced a 39-minute stoppage in the first half.
Darwin Nunez gave the visitors an 11th-minute lead from the penalty spot. Anirudh Thapa equalised for India in the 22nd minute, but play was halted in the 27th minute as lightning struck near the stadium and fans were asked to take shelter.
After the restart, Uruguay took control. Maxi Araujo scored in the 28th and 59th minutes, Rodrigo Zalazar struck in the 53rd, Juan Manuel Sanabria made it 5-1 in the 71st, and substitute Rodrigo Aguirre completed the rout in the 86th minute.
Uruguay were led by interim coach Diego Forlan and fielded stars like Nunez and Rodrigo Bentancur. India head coach Khalid Jamil’s side could not match their pace in the second half.
The result ends a tough international window for India, who drew 1-1 with Panama and lost 0-4 to Brazil earlier this month.
