Harmanpreet Kaur steps down as India women captain across formats

Harmanpreet Kaur has stepped down as captain of the India women’s cricket team. The decision covers all formats. She announced it on Instagram on Tuesday.
The 37-year-old will continue playing for India. The move came a day after a BCCI review meeting in Guwahati. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia led the meeting on Monday. Vice-captain Smriti Mandhana and coach Amol Muzumdar attended.
Harmanpreet led India on 211 occasions across formats. She captained in five Tests, 51 ODIs and 155 T20Is. The highlight was the 2025 ODI World Cup title on home soil.
She led India to back-to-back Asian Games gold medals in 2022 and 2026. She also won the Asia Cup in 2012, 2016 and 2022.
“Today, I step down as captain of the Indian Women’s Cricket Team across all formats,” she wrote. “This is not an easy decision.”
She said she gave everything to the team. “Captaincy may end today, but my love for Indian cricket never will,” she added. The home series against Zimbabwe begins on October 16. A new captain is yet to be named.
