Nitesh Siwach Wins Historic Greco-Roman Silver at Asian Games

Nitesh Siwach won the silver medal in the men's 97kg Greco-Roman wrestling event at the Asian Games 2026 in Nagoya on Thursday, ending India's 64-year wait for a finalist in the discipline.
Nitesh lost 0-4 to Japan's Yuri Nakazato in the gold medal bout at the Nagoya City Inae Sports Centre. Nakazato took a 2-0 lead after Nitesh was penalised for passivity, then extended his advantage in the second period.
He became the first Indian since Maruti Mane at the 1962 Asian Games to reach a Greco-Roman final — Mane had won silver in the same weight category.
Nitesh had dominated his earlier bouts, beating Turkmenistan's Amanberdi Agamammedov 7-1 in the quarterfinals and Mongolia's Ganbaataryn Gankhuyag 9-0 in the semifinals.
The 23-year-old from Jagsi village in Sonipat, Haryana, is the son of a small milk trader. After the medal, he dedicated the win to his father. President Droupadi Murmu congratulated him on social media.
