Karthik rules out Shami for 2027 World Cup

Dinesh Karthik believes India have “moved beyond” Mohammed Shami and sees no point in recalling the veteran pacer for the 2027 ODI World Cup.
“No. I feel there are other pacers. India have moved beyond him, so there’s no point in going back,” Karthik said on Cricbuzz’s ‘Hot Takes’. Shami last played for India at the 2025 Champions Trophy and has been ignored since, despite strong domestic form for Bengal. Selectors cited fitness concerns.
Karthik named four borderline misses for the 2027 squad: Gurnoor Brar, Prasidh Krishna, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Shami. He said Brar, who has 14 wickets in nine ODIs at an average of 41.50, “has proved to be expensive”.
He called Bhuvneshwar a “showstopper” who is “getting even better with age”, but doubted India would return to him either. Bhuvneshwar last played for India at the end of 2022.
The debate follows India’s 2-1 ODI series win over West Indies, where a Bumrah-less attack leaked runs — West Indies chased 352 in the final game. The 2027 World Cup will be held in South Africa, Namibia and Zimbabwe.
