Mendis Named Sri Lanka Test Captain as De Silva Steps Down

Kusal Mendis has been named Sri Lanka's Test captain, making him the country's all-format leader, hours after Dhananjaya de Silva stepped down from the role.
De Silva, 35, informed the selection committee on Thursday that he was leaving the Test captaincy with immediate effect but would remain available for selection.
"It is my genuine opinion that the mantle should go down to the next generation," he wrote in a letter to the selectors.
He led Sri Lanka in 18 Tests after being appointed in January 2024, winning seven, losing eight and drawing three.
Sri Lanka are seventh in the World Test Championship after a home series defeat to India and a series loss in the West Indies.
Mendis, who became white-ball captain in May, has played 75 Tests with 10 centuries. His first red-ball assignment is the two-match series in Pakistan starting November 9. Sri Lanka Cricket CEO Ashley de Silva thanked De Silva for the leadership he provided to the Test team.
