Gauff: Racist Abuse ‘Draining’ After Mertens Defeat

Coco Gauff says the racist abuse she received online after her China Open loss to Elise Mertens was “draining.” It was her first defeat to Mertens.
Gauff spoke out after the shock exit in Beijing. She said the volume of racist comments aimed at her on social media left her exhausted.
The Guardian, Sky Sports, ESPN and France 24 all reported her comments. Gauff has long been vocal about the abuse Black athletes face online.
The 22-year-old American is one of tennis’s biggest stars. She has repeatedly called on platforms to do more to stop racist abuse.
Her defeat to Mertens ended her China Open run early. But the conversation after the match was about the abuse, not the tennis.
Bleacher Report and France 24 also covered her remarks. NewsCord compared ten outlets’ coverage of the abuse Gauff faced after the China Open exit.
Sky Sports reported Gauff admitting she was drained by the abuse. ESPN covered her comments after the first loss to Mertens.
