Chicago Fire Extend Haile-Selassie Through 2028

The Chicago Fire have signed midfielder Philip Haile-Selassie to a contract extension through 2028, rewarding the Swiss playmaker for a career-best season under head coach Gregg Berhalter.
The 27-year-old has recorded nine goals and nine assists in 27 league appearances this season, and his 18 goal contributions lead the team. Since joining Chicago from Swiss side Lugano in 2023, initially on loan, he has made 116 MLS appearances with 22 goals and 30 assists.
Berhalter, who announced the extension on Thursday, praised Haile-Selassie’s creativity and work rate, calling him central to the team’s attacking identity. The Fire sit in playoff contention as the regular season enters its decisive stretch.
Chicago host New York City FC at Soldier Field on Saturday in a match that could significantly shape the Eastern Conference playoff race. A win would strengthen the Fire’s grip on a post-season berth.
The extension signals the club’s intent to build around its core under Berhalter, who took charge with a mandate to return the Fire to consistent playoff contention after years of underachievement.
