UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin has warned that Italy could lose its Euro 2032 hosting role if its stadiums are not ready. He repeated the warning this week in fresh comments about Italian football’s infrastructure.

“Euro 2032 will take place,” Ceferin said. But he added a blunt condition: if Italy’s infrastructure is not ready, “the tournament will not be held in Italy.”

Italy is co-hosting the tournament with Turkey. But Ceferin has called Italy’s stadiums “some of the worst in Europe.” Only Juventus’ Allianz Stadium in Turin currently meets all UEFA requirements.

Italy must name its five host stadiums in October. Eleven cities are candidates: Rome, Florence, Bologna, Verona, Milan, Genoa, Bari, Naples, Turin, Cagliari and Palermo. Works on new or redeveloped venues must begin by March 2027.

The stadium problem sits inside a bigger crisis. Italy failed to qualify for a third straight World Cup, losing on penalties to Bosnia and Herzegovina. Federation chief Gabriele Gravina resigned, along with delegation head Gianluigi Buffon.

UEFA executive Michele Uva has sounded calmer, saying he is convinced Italy will host with five stadiums. But the clock is ticking.
