CAS hears Senegal’s appeal over AFCON title today

The Court of Arbitration for Sport heard Senegal’s appeal on Thursday against the decision that stripped the country of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title and awarded it to Morocco.
The closed-door hearing took place at CAS headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland, before a three-member panel chaired by French arbitrator Gerald Simon, alongside Italy’s Luigi Fumagalli and Germany’s Ulrich Haas. Proceedings were conducted in French. CAS said deliberations will begin after the hearing, with a decision expected within days.
The dispute stems from the AFCON final on January 18 in Rabat. Senegal initially won 1-0 after extra time through Pape Gueye’s 94th-minute goal, but the match was overshadowed when several Senegal players walked off in protest after Morocco were awarded a penalty. Brahim Diaz missed the spot kick.
In March, CAF’s Appeals Board ruled Senegal had forfeited the final and recorded a 3-0 win for Morocco. Senegal’s federation registered its appeal on March 25, asking CAS to declare it the rightful champion.
