Big Ten admits officiating error in Nebraska win over Maryland

The Big Ten Conference has admitted an officiating error during Nebraska’s 48-23 win over Maryland last weekend. The conference issued a statement on Monday.
The mistake came on an extra-point attempt with 6.35 left in the fourth quarter. Nebraska extended its lead on a 30-yard touchdown pass from Anthony Colandrea to Kwazi Gilmer. Kicker Kyle Cunanan then missed the point-after try.
Maryland was flagged for roughing the kicker on the play. Officials wrongly let the miss stand and enforced the penalty yardage on the kickoff. The correct call would have moved Nebraska half the distance to the goal line for a re-try.
The conference said it has spoken to the officiating crew and will stress consistent application of the rules. Nebraska coach Matt Rhule said he accepted the kickoff penalty because he did not realize the kick had missed.
The error had no effect on the result, with Nebraska winning comfortably. The two teams combined for 28 penalties for 247 yards in a flag-filled game.
