Both Indian men’s doubles pairs stormed into the quarterfinals of the Asian Games tennis competition on September 29, setting up a medal-deciding Wednesday.

Fifth seeds Yuki Bhambri and Dhakshineswar Suresh beat Kazakhstan’s Beibit Zhukayev and Denis Yevseyev 6-1, 7-5. Top seeds Anirudh Chandrasekar and N Sriram Balaji thrashed Nepal’s Abhishek Bastola and Pradip Khadka 6-2, 6-1.

In singles, Sumit Nagal and Dhakshineswar Suresh advanced to the round of 16 on Tuesday with wins over South Korea’s Hong Seong-chan and Indonesia’s Gunawan Trismuwantara respectively.

Nagal faces Uzbekistan’s Sergey Fomin and Suresh meets Chinese Taipei’s Tseng Chun-hsin on Wednesday, while Bhambri and Rutuja Bhosale begin their mixed doubles campaign. Wednesday promises to be one of India’s biggest days at the Games, with athletics, boxing and shooting also in medal contention. Tennis officials say the doubles pairs have been India’s most reliable medal hopes in the squad events.
