A Wall Street Journal investigation has linked Kimberly Guilfoyle, the US ambassador to Greece, to the fall of the Romanian government led by Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan.

The Journal reported that Guilfoyle told Greek Energy Minister Stavros Papastavrou at a dinner in Athens in March that the US was involved in removing Bolojan’s government. She allegedly added, “We can do this to any country we want. We can do this here too.” Papastavrou pushed back, saying the US could not replace an elected government. Guilfoyle’s lawyer disputed the account.

The tensions are tied to the Vertical Corridor gas project, which would carry US liquefied natural gas through Greece and Romania. Bolojan’s government reportedly refused to buy US gas above market prices.

PSD president Sorin Grindeanu called the allegations “pure fabrications,” saying his talks with the diplomat covered only the gas corridor. Romanian Foreign Minister Oana Toiu said she discussed the report with US ambassador to Romania Darryl Nirenberg. She added that Guilfoyle’s visit to Romania was a private business event with no mandate to represent US views.
