Trump company files to trademark White House’s Trump TV

President Donald Trump’s private company has filed a federal trademark application seeking ownership of the name “TRUMP TV,” just three days after the White House launched a 24-hour streaming channel under the same brand.
DTTM Operations LLC, the entity that manages Trump-brand trademarks, filed the application on September 24, according to U.S. Patent and Trademark Office records. The filing seeks protection across broadcasting, streaming, mobile applications and news programming.
The White House had launched its “Trump TV” channel days earlier, streaming archived video of the president’s speeches and events. The debut came shortly after Trump moved to bar CNN, MS NOW and Politico from the White House grounds.
Trademark attorney Josh Gerben told Newsweek the setup raises questions about how the government would use a brand owned by the president’s private business. A licensing agreement between the federal government and the Trump Organization would likely be needed, though no fee would necessarily be required.
The application now faces review by the USPTO, an agency run by the executive branch. Initial review of new filings typically takes about five months.
