Trump says taxpayers will no longer fund his TV ads

President Donald Trump said on Monday that taxpayers will no longer pay for television ads promoting him, after bipartisan criticism of the campaign-style spots. He said he or his MAGA political action committee would fund them instead.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump called the ads a positive promotion for the country. A White House official said the ads would now be paid for by MAGA Inc, which holds about 400 million dollars.
Three nationally broadcast ads celebrate what they call a golden age of America. Ethics experts and lawmakers from both parties criticized them and called for independent investigations. Democratic lawmakers said the White House moved 20 million dollars in Homeland Security funds to air the ads.
AdImpact, a firm that tracks political advertising, estimated the government spent at least 10 million dollars airing the spots. They ran during football games as recently as Sunday and ended with disclaimers saying they were paid for by the US government.
The White House has defended the ads as public service announcements. It did not say whether the government would be reimbursed for ads that already aired.
