The Trump administration plans to remove 760,000 people from Affordable Care Act exchanges, alleging they were fraudulently enrolled or do not exist. Vice President JD Vance announced the move on September 23 alongside officials from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

Vance said roughly 315,000 enrollments covering 760,000 people would be cancelled, saving $2.2 billion. “We’re actually making sure that the people receiving Obamacare subsidies are actually entitled to receive them,” he said.

He added that another 419,000 enrollments will face extra verification. The administration also imposed a six-month suspension on new agents or brokers who sign up enrollees. About 19.2 million Americans are enrolled in ACA marketplace plans, according to federal data.

Separately, a Maryland federal court on August 22 stayed seven provisions of the administration’s marketplace rule pending a legal challenge. The administration has appealed to the Fourth Circuit, with open enrollment starting November 1.
