Democrat James Talarico leads Republican Ken Paxton by five points in the Texas Senate race, according to a new poll released Friday.

The Texas Public Opinion Research survey, conducted September 19 to 22 among 1,007 likely voters, put Talarico at 49 percent and Paxton at 44 percent. The margin of error is plus or minus 3.6 percentage points.

The five-point edge is slightly narrower than Talarico’s six-point lead in the pollster’s August survey. Undecided voters dropped from 7 percent to 3 percent, signaling the race is tightening as November nears.

Other recent polls show a closer contest. A Texas Southern University survey put Talarico ahead by just one point, 47 to 46 percent, while an Emerson College poll also found a one-point Talarico lead. An AARP survey gave the Democrat a four-point advantage.

Talarico, a state representative and former public school teacher, is challenging Paxton, the Texas attorney general. The race is being closely watched as Democrats try to flip a Senate seat in a state long held by Republicans.
