Shah flags off India’s first LNG-powered train
Union Home Minister Amit Shah has flagged off India’s first LNG-powered train from Sabarmati railway station in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. The train runs as a diesel-LNG dual-fuel Diesel Electric Multiple Unit, using both diesel and liquefied natural gas.
The dual-fuel system helps cut diesel consumption by up to 40 per cent and lowers greenhouse gas emissions. It marks a first for Indian Railways in cleaner fuel use for regional train services.
At the same event, Shah inaugurated railway development projects worth 1,472 crore rupees. He also opened a new maintenance shed for WAG-12 locomotives worth 700 crore rupees, in the presence of Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel.
Other projects included the WAG-12 locomotive inauguration and installation of the Kavach train protection system for 48 crore rupees. Kavach-related work on the Ahmedabad-Palanpur and Ahmedabad-Samakhiali sections was also taken up. The projects are expected to strengthen safety and capacity on the western rail network.
