The US Senate on Tuesday blocked a resolution on West Bank settler violence by 51 votes to 47, in a vote that exposed a sharp divide among Democrats over Israel.

The resolution, brought by Senator Chris Van Hollen, sought to put the Senate on record over rising settler violence in the West Bank. Nearly the entire Democratic caucus — including Minority Leader Chuck Schumer — voted in favour, while Senator John Fetterman was the only Democrat to vote no. Republican Rand Paul voted with the Democrats.

The vote fell short of the 60 needed to advance, killing the measure for this session. Supporters said the resolution was a necessary statement against violence; opponents argued it unfairly singled out Israel.

The result highlights how the party’s stance on Israel has fractured in recent years, with progressive members pushing for tougher action and others warning against straining the US-Israel relationship. A similar measure is unlikely to return before the midterms.
