Rajya Sabha Polls: 12 Candidates File for 10 UP Seats
Twelve candidates have filed nominations for 10 Rajya Sabha seats from Uttar Pradesh, the state’s chief electoral officer said. The Election Commission has scheduled polling for October 16.
The BJP fielded eight candidates, including Dharampal Singh, Radhakant Ojha, Prakash Pal, Vidyasagar Sonkar, Gopi Krishna Pandey, Priyanka Singh Rawat, Ram Pratap Singh Chauhan and Shruti Gangwar.
The Samajwadi Party, with Congress support, fielded Professor Ramgopal Yadav and Dhanraj Parimal Nathwani. Two independents also filed papers.
The terms of the 10 sitting members end on November 25. Scrutiny of nominations is on October 7, and the last date for withdrawal is October 9.
Based on Assembly strength, the BJP is set to win eight seats and the SP two. Ministers Hardeep Puri and BL Verma were not renominated. One Uttarakhand seat and a West Bengal bypoll also go to vote on October 16.
If no candidate withdraws by October 9, all twelve nominees will be declared elected without a contest. The results will shape the Rajya Sabha’s composition ahead of key legislative business in the winter session.
